Red & Green Combo Burritos

Red & Green Combo Burritos

Naugles was a fast food chain from the 1970s that Del Taco purchased in the late 1980s. By 1995 all of the original Naugles locations were closed and Del Taco has not used the name since. A new restaurant group was able, after a lot of work get the name and start to reopen. A foodie friend and Mexican food authority Christian @ocmexfood has been part of this effort from the beginning and has been wanting to do this for a long time. Well his dream has finally come true.

This week Naugles has opened a test kitchen in Fountain Valley. You can stop in and try much of the old menu (more is planned over time) using many of the old recipes and it is even rumored one of the people that used to work at Naugles back in the day is helping now.

I chose to sneak off today and see what the fuss was all about. I have to admit, I do not remember Naugles, but I have always been a fan of Del Taco especially the Barstow location, wish all Del Tacos were like that one. Turns out there are a lot of people that do remember the old Naugles and may were in line today. There were also a ton of foodies just checking out the latest joint. The place was packed and the line was long. Yes, it took a long time to get my food, yes they ran out of food, so what is the problem? NONE. They are brand new, and still figuring it out. As you would expect a bunch of people were grumbling, but they should get over it. This was not as bad as when Kogi Truck hit the seen, for the first 6 months it was minimum 2 hours to get food. Trust me, Naugles will figure it out. To be honest I did not care to wait at all, not because I wanted to bring back childhood memories but because any new restaurant needs time to get it right and I just wanted to be part of the buzz.

Now the food, one thing I can say is I really like their beans. Unlike Del Taco they have a ton of flavor and when their green or red sauce is added along with cheese they are to die for. Their ground beef was good, little bit wetter then most and very savory but had good spice and when added to the bean, cheese, and sauce (I am drooling again) mixtures in burritos or in their “cups” it is all good! The green sauce reminded me of the green sauce used at Del Taco. A little different but close, their red sauce reminded me of an enchilada sauce with a touch more tomato. I am glad I had something with each. Not sure I have a favorite which is odd, as I expected the green would be the hands down winner. Last part is the “Stubborn Soda” which turns out to be a brand of craft sodas from Pepsi (who knew). These were good as well, I had a chance to try the root beer and cherry flavors. Cherry was more popular with people ordering but I enjoyed the root beer more but both were good. I just like a good classic root beer every once in awhile and this fit that requirement. Surprisingly they also serve beer which I thought was cool!

Yes, I wrote about fast food, and we may do it again if something fun like Naugles opens again. Naugles was worth the wait. I am excited to go back in a couple of weeks once they start working it out. I know that they never expected to have this type of crowd this early in the process and I am super happy for them. Now if people would just relax, wait your turn, get something with beans, cheese and sauce and enjoy!
