Monell’s Nashville

On the edge of Nashville, in an area known as Germantown, is an old brick house that has been converted into a restaurant called Monell’s. This place is a southern food dream! They have eight tables that seat up to12 people. You will be seated and other people will be seated at the same table with you. You pay one flat fee and it is all you can eat, first come, first served. They have one or two main courses that change each day, but every day all meals are served with skillet fried chicken, several hot vegetables, salads, drink, dessert and biscuits. All food is made from scratch and with a lot of love.

We had crispy and juicy southern fried chicken, the best flaky biscuits served with white gravy or sweet peach preserves, mac and cheese, cole slaw, mashed potatoes, cornbread, corn and because it was Thursday, sliced beef in gravy and a tender juicy meatloaf with ketchup. To top it off dessert was banana pudding. The parade of food just keeps coming out of the kitchen until you can’t possibly shovel one more bite in your mouth…OK, maybe just one more biscuit!

There are a few rules worth mentioning. Take as much as you can eat but eat all that you take. Pass the bowls to the left. No cell phones calls allowed at the tables during dinner.

All of the food is served family style so serve yourself and then pass it to the left. It was like a big family dinner, except everyone at the table is a stranger. But by the end of the meal, you’ve broken bread, oohed and aahed over something delicious and so perhaps, you are all a little closer. If you are in Nashville, this is the one place you have to go. You need to get there early because they get busy!

Sliced Roast Beef w/ Gravy and Meatloaf

Fried Catfish & Spinach Lasagna
Friday Dinner:
add BBQ Ribs

Weekend Country Breakfast:
Smoked Sausage, Bacon, Biscuits and Gravy, Country Ham, Fried Apples, Pancakes, Scrambled Eggs, Hashbrowns, Cheese Grits, Skillet Fried Chicken, Corn Pudding, Coffee

Saturday Lunch:
Meatloaf & Pulled BBQ Pork
Saturday Dinner: Add Fried Catfish
Sunday Lunch:
Skillet Fried Chicken and Chef’s Choice of meats.
